Vietnam visa requirements for Malaysian citizens

As the Vietnam immigration policy, the Malaysian passport holders travelling Vietnam for tourism purposes can stay in the country for a maximum of 30 days, single entry with visa free. As the Vietnam visa exempted country, the Malaysian citizens can enter Vietnam by any port of arrival including airports (for air entry), border gates on land (for traveling by bus or train) or sea port (for traveling by cruise, ship).

In order to re-enter Vietnam with visa free program, the Malaysian passport holders have to to wait 30 days between two entries. Otherwise, they will need to apply for Vietnam visa.

1. What do Malaysian citizens need for Vietnam visa?

In order to apply for Vietnam visa, the citizens of Malaysia will need a valid passport which is at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival and there are blank pages for visa stamp.

2. How do Malaysian nationals apply for Vietnam visa?

2.1. Apply online for a Vietnam visa on arrival

The Malaysian passport holders can apply Vietnam visa on arrival from anywhere outside of Vietnam. The Vietnam visa will be picked up upon arrival at the Vietnam airports by showing up the printed approval letter.

The approval letter will be sent via email within 3 working days (normal processing mode), 8 working hours (rush processing mode), 4 hours (urgent processing mode) or even 2 hours (emergency processing mode) depending on which option you choose when submitting the visa application. Vietnam visa on arrival is especially beneficial for those who are living far from the Vietnam Embassy or Consulate in Malaysia or those whose e-visa is denied at the last minutes.

In order to get a Vietnam visa on arrival, the Malaysian passport holders should pay two types of fee: the processing fee and the stamping fee.
Processing fee: It is the fee for expediting the visa approval letter.
Stamping fee: The stamping fee is paid in cash at the visa counter at the arrival airport to get the visa stamp. The applicants must prepare the processing fee in cash (USD or VND) as far as there is no ATM, money changer or any other way to withdraw money in the immigration hall and credit cards are not accepted. Other currencies will be converted into USD at given exchange rate.

Notes:
– Visa on arrival is only applicable for Malaysian citizens traveling by air to Vietnam.

2.2. Apply for e-visa for Vietnam

From August 15, 2023, all the nationalities including Malaysian citizens are eligible for 90 days (single or multiple entry) e-visas for Vietnam.

In order to apply for Vietnam e-visa, the Malaysian citizens need to prepare:

  • Files of passport data page photo and passport-sized photo: The passport data page photo should show up 4 corners and borders of the main page in which all the information is displayed clearly without being flashed or obscured by fingers;
    The passport-sized photo must be taken in recently 6 months with eyes open, straight look, without wearing hat or glasses and be taken on a white or light coloured plain background;
  • Credit card or debit card that are enabled to conduct online payment. You can also make a payment via PayPal when you apply for an e-visa on our website;

How to apply e-visa for Vietnam?

Step 1: Fill the requirement information in the application form.
Step 2: Pay the visa fee and get e-visa in maximum 3 – 5 working days.
Step 3: Receive an email containing e-visa upon successful application. Please print out the e-visa, bring along with your passport to get on the plane.
Step 4: Present your e-visa at the immigration counter to get entry into Vietnam.

How to apply for urgent e-visa for Vietnam in 1 working day or few hours?

Normally, it takes 3 – 5 working days to complete an e-visa and you will receive an email to inform you that the visa is completed. You just need to enter your visa application code, email and date of birth to download your e-visa file.
After downloading your e-visa, you please check the visa information against your passport carefully. Any of spelling mistake, typos, incorrect passport number, date of arrival, entry ports… will not be accepted and it matters as the airlines will not let you board the plane with a wrong e-visa.   • If you have enough time, you should apply for a new e-visa immediately.
